Steve Gillis, Ph.D., Chairman

Dr. Steven Gillis is a managing director with ARCH Venture Partners, joining the firm in 2005. Dr. Gillis is focused on the evaluation of new life science technologies and also on the development and growth of ARCH's biotechnology portfolio companies. He is a director of Accelerator, Allozyne, Variation Biotechnologies, Surface Logix, PhaseRx, Pulmatrix and Qwell Pharmaceuticals. He serves as director and chairman of VentiRx Pharmaceuticals, Spaltudaq and VLST. As a former director and chairman of Trubion Pharmaceuticals (TRBN), he led its acquisition by Emergent BioSolutions in early 2010.

Dr. Gillis was a founder and director of Corixa Corp. and served as the company's chief executive officer from its inception and as its chairman from 1999 until its acquisition in 2005 by GlaxoSmithKline. Prior to Corixa, Dr. Gillis was a founder and director of Immunex Corp. From 1981 until his departure in 1994, he served as Immunex's director of research and development, chief scientific officer, and as chief executive officer of Immunex's R&D subsidiary. Dr. Gillis was interim chief executive officer of Immunex Corp. following its majority purchase by American Cyanamid Co. and remained a member of the board until 1997. Amgen, Inc. acquired Immunex in 2002.

Dr. Gillis is an immunologist by training with over 300 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of molecular and tumor immunology. He is credited as being a pioneer in the field of cytokines and cytokine receptors, directing the development of multiple marketed products including Leukine, (GM-CSF), Prokine (IL-2) and Enbrel (soluble TNF receptor-Fc fusion protein), as well as the regulatory approval of Bexxar (radiolabeled anti-CD20). Dr. Gillis received a B.A. from Williams College and a Ph.D. from Dartmouth College.

Kristina Burow Managing Director, ARCH Venture Partners

Kristina Burow is a Managing Director with ARCH, joining the firm in 2002. Her investment focus includes biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and alternative energy companies. Ms. Burow has played a significant role in the formation and financing of Receptos Pharmaceuticals, Sapphire Energy, Lycera, Kilimanjaro Energy and others.

Ms. Burow is a co-founder and director of Sapphire Energy and a director of Receptos Pharmaceuticals, Lycera, and Kilimanjaro Energy. She has participated in the funding and development of several other portfolio companies including Siluria Technologies, Ensemble Therapeutics, Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, Ikaria, Achaogen, Quanterix, Sorbent and Accelerator Corporation.

Prior to ARCH, Ms. Burow was an Associate with the Novartis BioVenture Fund in San Diego where she was involved in numerous investments in the life science sector. As an early employee at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), she directed Chemistry Operations and was active in Business Development where she helped create numerous companies as spin outs from GNF.

Ms. Burow holds a M.B.A. from the University of Chicago, a M.A. in Chemistry from Columbia University and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley.

Gary D. Glick, Ph.D.

Dr. Gary D. Glick founded Lycera in 2006, and was responsible for raising the seed round and Series A financing for the company. Since 1990, Dr. Glick has been a member of the chemistry faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he presently holds the Werner E. Bachmann Chair in Chemistry. In addition, he is a professor in the department of biological chemistry at the University of Michigan Medical School and is a member of the training faculty for the interdepartmental immunology and medicinal chemistry doctoral programs. He is also the founder and director of the chemical biology doctoral program at Michigan. Dr. Glick's research interests focus on drug discovery and development for autoimmune diseases and cancer, chemical-induced apoptosis, nucleic acid structure, folding and recognition, and molecular recognition of nucleic acids by proteins.

Dr. Glick has served and continues to serve on numerous boards and committees, including the Bioorganic & Natural Products Chemistry Study Section of the National Institutes of Health and the scientific advisory board of the National Arthritis Foundation, Michigan Chapter. He serves on several editorial boards, is editor-in-chief of Biopolymers, a leading journal publishing in the areas of biochemistry and biophysics, and is a counselor to the American Chemical Society Division of Biological Chemistry.

Dr. Glick's scientific contributions have been recognized with a number of different awards including an Arthritis Investigator Award from the National Arthritis Foundation, a Junior Faculty Research Award from the American Cancer Society, a Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, a Research Fellowship from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and two Research Excellence Awards from the University of Michigan. He is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Dr. Glick received a Ph.D. from Columbia University and completed a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University.

Robert Kamen, Ph.D.

Dr. Robert Kamen is a consultant to the biotech and pharmaceutical industry. Most recently, he was president of Abbott Bioresearch Center, Abbott Laboratories' immunology drug discovery and biologics production unit in Worcester, Massachusetts, and a member of the Abbott Pharmaceuticals Executive Management Committee. During Dr. Kamen's leadership at BASF/Abbott, the company established the technology platform for Humira™ (adalimumab), the first fully human antibody to achieve marketing approval in the U.S. (and Europe). Currently marketed for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease and psoriasis, Humira was the most rapidly growing U.S. biological drug in 2007 and 2008. In 2005, Dr. Kamen co-founded BioAssets Development Corporation, a biotherapeutics company focusing on spinal diseases, where he serves as chairman. In addition, Dr. Kamen is a member of several other biopharmaceutical company boards.

Dr. Kamen has an undergraduate degree in biophysics from Amherst College and a Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard University.

Nina Kjellson

Nina Kjellson is a general partner at InterWest Partners, a leading diversified venture capital firm, where she focuses primarily on investments in biopharmaceuticals. Ms. Kjellson led InterWest's investment in APT Pharmaceuticals and Nereus Pharmaceuticals where she is an observer on the board. Additionally, she supports InterWest's investments in AkaRx, Devax, Kanisa and MacuSight. Ms. Kjellson's past successfully exited investments include Aspreva Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Galenica) and NovaCardia (acquired by Merck). Prior to joining InterWest, Ms. Kjellson was an investment manager at Bay City Capital, a life sciences merchant bank, and a research associate at Oracle Partners, a healthcare-focused hedge fund. She is also a board member of Alvine Pharmaceuticals, Eiger Biopharmaceuticals, Primera Diagnostics, Sequel and Trius Therapeutics.

Ms. Kjellson received a B.S. in human biology from Stanford University.

Timothy M. Mayleben

Mr. Tim Mayleben is chief executive officer, president, and a member of the board of directors at Aastrom Biosciences. Previously he was an advisor to life science and healthcare companies through his advisory and investment firm, ElMa Advisors. He has also been president, chief operating officer and a director of NightHawk Radiology Holdings, Inc. Mr. Mayleben also served as chief operating officer of Esperion Therapeutics, where he led the raising of more than $200 million in venture capital and institutional equity funding and later negotiated the acquisition of Esperion by Pfizer in December 2003. Mr. Mayleben is on the advisory board of the Wolverine Venture Fund and serves as a director for several private life science companies.

He holds an M.B.A. with distinction from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a B.A. in business administration from the University of Michigan Ross Business School.

Kathleen M. Metters, Ph.D.

Dr. Kathleen M. Metters joined Lycera as president and chief executive officer in October 2011. At that time she also joined the company's board of directors. Dr. Metters brings more than 25 years of pharmaceutical discovery and development experience to Lycera, as well as a proven track record of global leadership in the pharmaceutical industry. She has more than 20 years of experience specifically in the discovery of novel therapeutic agents for treatment of unmet medical needs. Throughout her career, Dr. Metters has been a co-author on 74 publications and 29 patents.

Prior to joining Lycera, Dr. Metters had a 23-year career at Merck where she held multiple leadership roles of increasing responsibility. Most recently, she served as senior vice president of external discovery and preclinical sciences where was responsible for expanding the company's global scientific network to the greater research community across multiple stakeholders. Prior to this role, Dr. Metters served as senior vice president and head of worldwide basic research. In this position, she oversaw all research activities at major sites around the globe, across all therapeutic modalities and all therapeutic areas. During her early career at Merck Frosst Canada Inc., Dr. Metters' research focused on the arachidonic acid cascade which resulted in the discovery of SINGULAIR® and TREDAPTIVE®.

She graduated with a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Dr. Metters completed her post‐doctoral training at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France, and at the Clinical Research Institute of Montréal.

Michael Steinmetz, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael Steinmetz has been managing director of Clarus Ventures since the firm's inception in 2005. Prior to Clarus, Dr. Steinmetz was a general partner at MPM Capital, a healthcare venture capital firm. He has more than 25 years of direct industry and investment experience within the healthcare sector. From 1986 to 1997, Dr. Steinmetz was an executive at Hoffmann-LaRoche where he held various positions including vice president of preclinical research and development, and global head of biotechnology.

Dr. Steinmetz also represents Clarus Ventures on the Board of Directors of Heptares, Oxford Immunotec, TetraLogic and Variation Biotechnologies. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Allozyne, Macrogenics, and TaiGen. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of Allozyne, Macrogenics, and TaiGen.

Dr. Steinmetz obtained his Ph.D. summa cum laude from the University of Munich and held positions at the California Institute of Technology and the Basel Institute for Immunology.

Mary Campbell, Observer

Mary Campbell is a managing director and founder of EDF Ventures. She has been an active investor both in healthcare and information technology companies for more than 20 years. Currently, Ms. Campbell sits on the boards of HandyLab, Health Care Solutions, Rhevision Technology, ValenTx and is a board observer for Cerenis Therapeutics, The Echo Group and QuadraSpec.

Ms. Campbell is active with The Stephen M. Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and currently serves as an advisor to the Zell Lurie Institute for entrepreneurial studies as well as its student-run venture activity, the Wolverine Venture Fund. She is an advisor to the University of Michigan's Life Science Institute as well as a member of the steering committee for the Michigan Strategic Economic Investment and Commercialization Board, a statewide initiative to foster research and commercialization. Ms. Campbell is also president of the Michigan Venture Capital Association, the state's premier public policy advocate for the private equity/venture capital industry.

Ms. Campbell received an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in special education from Fairfield University and a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan.
